How to Create a GIF from a Video

GIF stands for 'Graphics Interchange Format' that was introduced by CompuServe back in the late 80's. Creating GIF's from a video is a bit of a thing from the past but is defiantly fun for social networks and especially if your signed to up to forums as most of those accept GIF's for avatar use.

So first things first on how to create a GIF from a video is we need some footage, I recommend to keep it lower length as possible due to the output of the file size. You can use many formats of video with the software where are going to use which can be downloaded here:

AVS4YOU VIDEO CONVERTER  (right click and open in new window)

1. Install the software and load it up

2. Find some footage, I'm using the YouTube downloader / Conversion method on my "Youtube to DVD" tutorial on my blog and I've found a failed skateboard trick I'm going to be adding to the AVS converter, please follow the settings from my screenshot below:

When you've tweaked all that you should have an output GIF simular to this:

A pretty good result, the files only 250k for a 3 second color movie loop, so this is how you create a GIF from a video, feel free to tweak the quality settings to adjust file size just in case you have upload limitations on the forum server or whatever your using

How to Convert Youtube to DVD

The first thing you’ll need to transfer YouTube to DVD is YouTube downloader, YouTube Downloader is a common, free program that enables you to download and convert internet movies (legal content, to which you have the rights) for future viewing on your desktop or mobile device as well as DVDs if you plan on converting. It can convert files to MOV, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AVI, or MP3. Its free and available by visiting the link here:

The second thing you’ll need is Convert-X-to-DVD, Watch your videos on any TV with there avi to DVD converter software. Convert 1 or move videos to DVD. Designed for novices, but with advanced settings available.
  • Create menus with videos and music
  • Preview window
  • Add chapters - automatic or custom
  • Subtitle files supported
  • Convert NTSC to PAL and vice-versaMerge function - like for CD1 + CD2
  • and so on (check there website for a full list of features)
There is a free version and also a paid version for extra features and so on, the download link is here:

The third thing you’ll need is, obviously, an internet connection for transferring YouTube to DVD. I’m going to go through the process step by step

1. I’ve chosen a movie from the charity British Heart Foundation as the quality when maximized on my pc screen should be watchable on a standard sized TV. When you have found a movie suitable for you copy and paste the URL on the page you are viewing

2. We’ll install youtubedownloader and load it up then we’ll add the URL as shown below on the screenshot (leave every other checkbox etc as default as some require upgrade, unless you wanted to change where the file is to be saved)

3. Next we’ll wait for the download, you’ll see the progress on the tab “activity”, after the download go to the convert tab and select the .FLV video file you saved, by default this should be “My Documents”, on the ‘Convert Video to” drop down box I recommend choosing “X-Vid MPEG-4 Codec AVI”, this is because it’ll make our next steps easier when we go to convert YouTube to DVD and last but not least keep the conversion quality to ‘High’ then press “CONVERT VIDEO” button. Conversion activity should be seen in the “activity tab”

4. The converted file should be saved in the same directory as the .FLV file you downloaded, mine is My Documents. Now install and load up Convert-X-to-DVD and simply drag the converted .AVI file you made in youtubedownloader straight into the blank white area in Convert-X-to-DVD below where it says “Tree View” or simply “File > Add Video File”, it should look somewhat like the screenshot below:

5. Notice how my project is very short, however, if I wanted to add more movies to my project I’d simply repeat these steps from step 1, you can do anything you’d like that suits your needs, when your happy simply insert a blank DVD and press CONVERT.

That’s all there is to it to transfer YouTube to DVD, just remember when you’ve installed Convert X to DVD for the first time, there is a default menu that will appear when you’ve burnt projects, you can customize the menus under settings.

Here is a desktop recording with the step by step process I used above for more help if you need it..

TIP: Highlight the video file text and press F2 or right click and press “Edit Title Set”, whatever you input will show up on the DVD Menu.

I hope you find this useful, please keep popping back for more video & software tips - “CTRL + D” to bookmark

Have fun!
